Hels + Lewis – A Soho Jazz Inspired Wedding Party

Posted by & filed under Groom, London, London Weddings, Real Weddings.

There is a lot to be said for bride and grooms like Hels and Lewis. They had a fuss free, low key affair that was centered around their families and their love of music and books (he’s in a band, she’s a magazine editor), and of course each other. Photographed by the fabulous Laura McCluskey, this stylish pair had a sweet Marylebone Town Hall ceremony followed by a cosy reception at The Union members club in Soho. What I love most is that they carefully considered suppliers who’s style fit theirs and then let them roll with what they did best. And the results? Well, I think they speak for themselves…

I love Hels’ style, a sort of modern relaxed vintage and if you haven’t already looked at the credits, can you believe this dress is from Phase Eight on the high street? She makes it look a million dollars!

My dress was really inexpensive and didn’t require too much hunting around – I saw it months before the wedding while I was still looking for vintage dresses. I tried it on and my sister – the Maid of Honour – cried her eyes out when I put it on (in a good way), so I went with it. I had three other bridesmaids, including Lewis’ sister and two old friends, who in keeping with the relaxed feel of the day, chose their own dresses.

My hair and makeup was by The Chapel Islington, who I know and trust through my job as a magazine editor. They came to the hotel (Dean Street Townhouse) on the morning of the wedding.

Lewis’ Nan is in her 80s and can’t travel, so we decided to stay in London for the wedding. Lewis had been to the Union for a meeting and when he showed me photos it looked like it was our kind of place. We went to meet the manager and his staff, and everyone was so friendly and relaxed and helpful that we stopped considering other reception venues straight away. And since neither of us is particularly religious or wanted a long, formal ceremony, we thought a civil service at Marylebone Town Hall would be best for the marriage itself.

We didn’t want themes or colour schemes to take over – we were never into the idea of a wedding that cost the earth and looked like it had been planned with military precision. We just wanted a cool party. So we decided very early on that the only guiding aesthetic principle would be that everything should be to our tastes and fit in with our characters. And since the Union has so much charm and this amazing, mixed-up interior anyway, we didn’t have to do much to the reception venue. We provided the flowers, a 1940s record player, some of our favourite jazz records, photos of us with our friends/families/dogs, books for favours (with little bookplates we made ourselves) and the seating plan for dinner. That was it. We also liked the idea of getting married in Soho – the heart of London – where we have both worked at one time or another.

Having just recently worked with The girls from the Flower Appreciation Society I was thrilled to see that they had sprinkled a bit of magic on this wedding too. Hel’s said “They make these incredible, rambling, earthy bouquets of British wild flowers and the stuff they did for our wedding was jaw-dropping. They have this really unique and beautiful vision that a lot of suppliers lack. They’re artists, really.” I fully agree!

We wanted to keep things informal, colourful and a little offbeat. This might have been inspired by the old jazz music and imagery we both like so we had some jazz touches like the table names (Django, Satchmo, Ella, Nina and Chet) and so on (our dog is called Django!). But generally we just left our suppliers to do what they do best. We didn’t think we’d get the best results by sticking our oars in and trying to control everything to the nth degree: we hired them because their work fit our vision of what flowers/photos/etc should be, and we let them get on with it.”  Such a refreshing attitude from a couple!

Lewis designed these colourful, transparent vinyl stickers that we used for the seating plan, bookplates and, later, the thank-you cards. The books went down well, too – for favours we gave everyone a copy of one of two novels by Antoine de Saint-Exupery – either The Little Prince or Wind, Sand & Stars. I was reading the former when Lewis and I first got together at the age of 17; Lewis found the latter in a house in LA where we stayed while he was recording his last album earlier this year. They’re both beautiful books and we each read something from one of them as part of the marriage service.

Special Moment…

The ceremony was fun, and the London bus to the venue afterwards was nice, sat amongst all our friends and family. The speeches were brilliant. Most memorable, though, is probably the fact that we managed to get married on probably the only sunny Saturday in London during the whole of May or June!

These are some of the most gorgeous portraits I’ve seen. Amazing work from photographer Laura, and all in a hotel room! Love the bath shots…

Planning Tips…

Everyone’s different but keeping it simple and true to our tastes worked for us. Choosing less obvious suppliers really helped us to get character with minimal effort. Oh and good parents: we have the best parents and they made a lot of it possible!

For their music the couple made a playlist full of music that they thought would suit everyone.  It started with lots of jazz and smokey lounge, the first dance was Sam Cooke’s Nothing Will Ever Change This Love – then it was disco, Motown, soul, reggae, old pop, new pop… everything we love. I think we ended with The Beatles’ In My Life. Everyone danced non-stop, it was great.

These guys are effortlessly cool and it’s refreshing to see a beautiful wedding that didn’t cost the earth, or take over their lives but was everything they wanted and still full of personality. Congratulations to you both and thanks to photographer Laura McCluskey for kindly sharing her work.

London Groom – If James Bond Were My Fiancé

Posted by & filed under Aisle Style, Groom.

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of meeting up with the fabulously chic Sammy of Sammy Aki who is a groom style consultant. Yup that’s right. It can be a bit of a struggle for those boys to know how or where to shop and Sammy can help with everything, from the shoes, to the bow tie she is the go to girl for grooms – specialising in ready to wear, made to measure and bespoke experiences for the groom.

So I’ll admit I may know a thing or two about wedding dresses, but this girl knows all about the style for guys so I’m handing over to Sammy today…

With the release of Skyfall this week, we couldn’t let this opportunity pass us by and I started thinking about James Bond and my imaginary role as the next bond girl (that doesn’t die) and this then obviously led to me considering the scenario of …

If James Bond were my fiancé…(a girl can most certainly dream).

The Wedding Suit…

Whilst working on Savile Row, each season I found myself spending a considerable amount of time cataloguing the fabrics. You have no idea how many varieties of Navy that are available, all with subtle changes in tone. My favourite description from the mills was Super Dark Navy – which is of course different to Super Navy. (editors note: is it just me or does this remind anyone else of the scene in Father of the Bride with Naavi Bluuu tuxeeeedo!?). From this time I have grown a big affection for the term something blue and if James Bond were my fiancé he definitely would be wearing the Midnight Blue Shawl collared dinner jacket created by Tom Ford for Skyfall.

There are several reasons for this, firstly I envision our ceremony starting just before dusk and whilst black tie is smart I do believe that it is not meant to be worn before 6pm- I have never been a fan of a black suit as black can often appear boring and drab, especially in the daylight. Whereas Midnight blue has a richer hue even under the artificial light of the wedding cameras flash, so lends itself to looking refined both before and after the sun goes down.

Unlike the classic black tie attire the midnight blue, which garnered its popularity in the 1930’s, has been rare to find off the peg.  The perfect sophisticated style to have made to measure. As The Groom Style Consultant I’d certainly seek to prevent my Groom from wearing the same outfit as the guests invited so by selecting a fine cloth in this colour and crafting an impeccably cut suit I’d ensure James Bond would project his easy elegance, that we all recognise, throughout the day and I’m sure he will return to this suit time and time again.

The Drive…

I know James Bond would have tried out a number of cars before settling on his trusted Aston Martin DB5 to whisk us off from the ceremony. The car has a number of great gadgets (though I don’t think we will be in need of the machine guns). However you never know when the radar tracker, revolving number plates or carphone may come in handy. Or perhaps just the smoke screen…

The Honeymoon…

Having jetted all over the world, staying in the most exclusive and often remote locations James definitely knows how to relax and enjoy the finer things in life. However this is also where I feel he would seek to impress by showing his thoughtful and sentimental side. With this in mind we would enjoy the first weeks of marital bliss together on the island and home of his creator Ian Fleming, Goldeneye Resort in Jamaica. Not only is this piece of paradise where Fleming penned the character of Bond, but also Chris Blackwell, of Island records, owns it so the sounds and spirit of the Caribbean is felt throughout.

Honeymoon Wardrobe…

Mr Bond pays particular attention to his swimwear (ahem, as do we). As this is possibly the only piece of clothing he will be wearing for the next few weeks he appreciates that the cut, fit and fabric is not just something he has to consider for his tailoring. Keen to champion British brands and also add a touch of his wife’s West African flavour the new brand Okun swimwear would be the first thing packed.

Well that was a rather fun indulgent post, I think Sammy can come back again! I would absolutely love to see this style translated through a wedding (and beyond!). Navy tux’s all the way…

Well Groomed – Liberty Print Ties

Posted by & filed under Groom.

It’s nice when our men scrub up well I do love to see a dashing groom in a well cut suit, fitted shirt and a stylish tie, and ever since I posted this rainbow wedding I have become rather fond of the Liberty fabric ties.
You can make your own from their plethora of beautiful floral fabrics if you are skilled in the sewing arena, or know someone who is, but if not [let's face it, this is more the likely option] you can buy some stunning floral ties from their Liberty London Collection. They are so classic, a floral tie will never date [especially when it's Liberty!].
Here’s a few of my favourites…

Take A Bow – Vintage & Stylish Bow Ties by ‘hello in there’

Posted by & filed under Accessories, Fashion + Style, Groom.

I’m pleased to update you all that the bell & belle bow tie collection from hello in there are now available again, whoop! Their vintage bow ties are so lovely and unique, I can vouch for that as  I bought Mr M one as a gift and he donned it for a wedding last week. He looked rather dapper, even if I do say so myself!
I do like a man in a nice dickie bow, and up until now I could be found checking out the grooms [for research purposes, obv] on U.S wedding blogs with their dashing checks and fun gingham bow ties and thinking why oh why are they so hard to find in the style capital that is London?
Myself and Mr M went on the search earlier in the year for him to wear for a wedding and we were pretty unimpressed with the selection we discovered – it was either black velvet dinner ones or hideous garish patterns that only your Great Uncle Dave would consider sporting.

Needless to say that it was a rather nice surprise to get an email from the clever and creative sister and brother duo, Bev and Adam who have just started up new boutique ‘hello in there’ whilst finalising their studies in textiles and architecture. Gotta love that young family spirit!

Such is the way of many small companies, after making well received presents for friends, the boutique was born and Bev and Adam are aspiring to create unique, stylish and fun attire for both guys and gals.
The newest offering being ‘bell & belle bow ties - crafted from vintage and remnant fabrics and individually handmade these are perfect for the groom looking for that unique, quirky and affordable finishing touch to his dapper suit. The handmade touch makes it just so much more special to wear, and much nicer to buy a unique design and support growing businesses than popping to Tie Rack wouldn’t you?!

Keep an eye out for these two… something tells me they may not find a use for that architecture degree…
