Helen + Owen – Theatrical Princelet Street Wedding

Today’s mysterious wedding had the magic captured by Pen and Cam of McKinley Rodgers whom I had the pleasure of meeting the other week at LWE. These guys are utterly lovely as well as super talented,  and if you are looking for laid-back, honest photography then do go check more of their beautiful work! You can also see them over there on the right hand side too as I’m thrilled to welcome them as a new sponsor of London Bride!

So back to this amazing wedding…. being a bit of a film fanatic and someone who studied performance [yes indeed!], I often imagine my wedding day playing in my head like a film [anyone else do that!?]. The atmosphere, the camera cuts from guests, to me and my new husband, the score, the immaculate fashion and of course….The Set. Well, this little gem of a London wedding is pretty much like something out of a film, with all those elements but especially The Set. No surprises then, bride Helen is a designer in the theatre world….and it certainly looked like the most wonderful stage ever for a wedding day.

Helen and Owen had a winter wedding ceremony in December at Islington Town Hall, wrapped up in their warm coats, they were showered with a rainbow of confetti. A musical parade towards a shiny red bus then took them to the MOST mysterious venue I’ve ever seen. And there followed an evening of candlelight, acoustic music, dancing, cheese, mulled wine and lots of love and laughter.

Helen’s lovely 60s embellished gown for the ceremony was an original vintage item from The Vintage Wedding Dress Company [now Charlie Brear VWDC - I know we have similar names, so weird!]. She teamed the dress with sentimental accessories from both her grandmothers. What better way to wrap up warm against the harsh British winter than with a beautiful vintage fur coat too?

From the bride, Helen: “Our day began at The Boundary Hotel E1, we took cars to the Town Hall, my best girls with me. Dad at my side. I sourced the bridesmaids accessories from Spitalfields markets and Grays Antique market, their dresses were found scouring Ebay and Dad hired a three piece suit from The Manchester Exchange Theatre. I borrowed furs from a friend who works at a theatre near us.”

“It rained, which was moody and enchanting along the cobbled streets of Spitalfields, we had moments of sun as we came out of the ceremony for photos, and during the procession from our bus to the reception lead by musician mates Aruhan and Gwen. We all cosied up by the fires and candlelight in Princelet Street and feasted on Roast Beef, mulled wine and delicious mince pies, wheels of cheese and port.”

I’m a freelance designer for the theatre, so I approached the day as I would a set and costume design. It was very important to us that the day was intimate, romantic and partly a mystery for our guests. The reception was a well known but off the beaten track film location. We hired it for the day and danced within its tumbling and atmospheric walls.

Owen and I couldn’t have been more happy on the day with the support of our families and friends. Thank you to all the talented people we know!”

What an amazing day, so intimate, romantic and definitely air an of mystery about it. Thank you to gorgeous couple Owen and Helen for sharing their day and and the credits are a testament to the talented and kind friends and family who were a part of the day too.  Thanks to fab photographer’s McKinley Rodgers.

London Bride Loves – Stationery by Dottypink Designs

Dottypink Designs Cute Wedding Stationery

I haven’t featured much paper pretty on here lately, and now there are now so many options out there for brides in terms of stationery you are quite frankly spoilt for choice! From the beautiful to the traditional to the fun to the romantic – there is something to suit every budget and style and the fabulous Dottypink Designs offer all of the above!

I’m a big fan of using nice bold type and colours on invitations as I think they make a welcome change to the scripted ivory cards that tend to get slipped through the postboxes these days. For her collections I like how Amy who runs Dottypink Designs, combines pretty fonts with some simple graphic illustrations to make for sweet and modern stationery and I love seeing how she translates bespoke briefs too which are always so unique. Based in North Yorkshire Amy having graduated with a design degree and since getting married herself she has enjoyed expanding to create pretty paper pieces for other brides!

Here are some examples of her lovely designs and I also put a few questions to Amy to tell us more about her work…

Q – How did you start out in wedding stationery

I have been a graphic designer for 5 years since I graduated with a graphic design degree. When I got engaged in 2009 I knew I wanted to design our wedding stationery, and after receiving such amazing comments from our guests I then got asked to design stationery for family and friends too. I really enjoyed it and decided to make a go of it within the wedding industry which has so far gone very well, with my work most recently reaching the finals of the Wedding Ideas Awards 2013.

Q – What’s the most fun brief you’ve worked on?
In terms of stationery designs, as well as having an ‘Off the Peg’ collection, I also design bespoke stationery too and I get some really lovely requests. A recent favourite has been an outdoor, teepee and woodland animal style design with lots of lovely typography. I really enjoy working on all the stationery but bespoke designs really excite me and challenge me to come up with unique and personal ideas perfect for each couple!

Q – What’s your most popular product or design?

All couples are different and have their own ideas for their big day so they do tend to choose different designs from the Off the Peg collection, but the most popular design of 2012 seems to be the Village Fete stationery. I’ve been asked to customise it in lots of colour combinations and I have to say I think it works really well in all of them. I’ll have to wait and see which design is the most popular this year as I’ve just recently added some new designs to my collection.

Q – What trends in stationery will we see from you in 2013?

I’m a big fan of colour, paper and typography, but I also love illustrating and I’ve added a couple of illustrated items already to my collection. I like to keep the card stock quite straight forward and let the designs do the talking, which is why my invitations are postcard sized for simplicity and ease of postage, and the eco aspect is really important to me so finding new ways to do my bit for the environment is something I will be researching more into this year. In terms of the designs, I just love developing ideas and playing with colour palettes, paper textures and type so I would expect more of that in my collection, with perhaps some more cute illustrated items as well.

And a few quick fires…

Colour or black and white? Colour every time!

Illustration or typography?Ooh that’s so tricky – can I have a bit of both?

Modern or vintage?  Modern (with a vintage twist!)
You can see more of Dottypink’s current collections here or you can order sample packs here too if you fancy seeing them up close! Amy loves taking on bespoke commissions to so if you have an idea for your own unique stationery do get in touch with her as she’d love to hear from you.
The stationery collections start from just £2.25 per A6 invitation and the colours and text are all fully customisable! Bespoke commissions have a design fee of just £75 to create your own unique invitations (or save the dates!) plus any printing costs. To contact Amy visit her website for more information.

A Perfect Mini Break – Barnsley House Spa

Posted by & filed under London Bride, London Bride Loves.

Barnsley House Spa Break

It’s not often I get a break, and even more rare that I get a break with Mr London Bride. It’s a busy old life living in the city, both juggling our own businesses and back in November it crept up to our 10 year anniversary [I know seriously, how has he put up with me for that long!?]. So we had a bit of a  to-hell-with-it moment and treated ourselves to a mini-break away from the city to the amazing Barnsley House in the Cotswolds.

I’d seen beautiful weddings at Barnsley House, and it was only when I checked out their website that I noticed they had a midweek spa break, so I was completely sold! The Cotswolds is a beautiful area to explore in itself – windy roads, stone cottages, pretty churches, cosy pubs and if I could pick a perfect place for a mini-break this would definitely be it.

Barnsley House literally ticked every box on my mini break-must-have list: luxurious rooms, ridiculously indulgent baths/showers, products that end up in your toiletry bag, beautiful grounds, amazing food, cosy fire, bar… it even has it’s own intimate cinema, drawing room with board games and wellie hire. The service whilst it was excellent it was barely there so it also felt nice and private [that may have helped that we were there mid-week].

Please excuse the photos, they were with a humble iphone, must try harder next time…

LB_BarnsleyHouse_0005LB_BarnsleyHouse_0008LB_BarnsleyHouse_0003

Barnsley House is made up of rooms in the main building itself, but also separate more quirky rooms adjacent buildings. Ours, I have to admit was the quite the delicious cherry on the top. The ‘Secret Garden’ room with it’s own teeny front door, stone walled private courtyard with stepping stones over a pond, lead you to a beautifully designed suite, both cosy and luxurious. It featured a huge four poster bed, comfy living room area and a minibar with it’s own nespresso machine. It was impressive…and then I clocked the epic bathtub framed by the floor to ceiling windows overlooking your own private pond and courtyard. Oh yes, it was definitely as indulgent as it looks.

I didn’t get to experience any of the other rooms but having taken a look at the website I don’t think any of the handsome, farrow and ball hued rooms could disappoint. It’s just the right touch between contemporary style and comfortable country character. I should mention the only downside – which was lack of phone signal, but hey we shouldn’t be checking our emails or tweeting whilst on a mini-break anyway…should we [ahem]. Embrace the peace and quiet!

LB_BarnsleyHouse_0004LB_BarnsleyHouse_0009LB_BarnsleyHouse_0007

We had a wonder around the village and then decided to stop off for glass of wine, sat by the roaring fire at the sister hotel, The Village Pub which is just across the road. Sofa, fire, wine, me and him and the papers. It was really quite blissful.

In the evening we also decided to dine back at the more casual Village Pub for a delicious [though rather swift] three course meal, before heading to the hotel’s private cinema to watch Moulin Rouge. Despite the cinema being just across the road, it was dark and cold so a kind member of staff actually escorted us to the cinema safely, now that’s service! We were greeted with popcorn and large comfy seats to enjoy the film. Again, bliss.

Barnsley House Spa Break

The next day, we were up early and after a very satisfying breakfast we headed just down the garden path [literally] ready to make the most of the hotel garden spa, which come wind or rain, I was definitely going to try out the outdoor heated pool. We both had a lovely treatment in the spa, a chill out in their relaxation room, and a more than lengthy dip in the soothing pool. Despite it being freezing outside, the clear blue skies above us felt like we were in Scandinavia, it was breathtaking.

LB_BarnsleyHouse_0010

I feel I should apologise for the indulgent-this-was-amazing feature, but when something impresses me this much, it deserves to be shouted about [although I did have to think twice about telling you about this place!].

Book Barnsley House for an anniversary, a pre-wedding break, a get away from the city break, or if within budget – most certainly check it out for exclusive wedding hire. I certainly went away clutching their brochures…

*I would like to say this isn’t a sponsored post, it was our own funded trip, however they did look after us very well and kindly upgraded us to the incredible Secret Garden suite, so huge thanks to the staff for looking after us – it made the time there even more special.
