Jennie + James – A colourful and cute Italian vintage wedding

Colourful Lonodn Wedding at Delfina by Catherine Mead Photography

A burst of colour on the blog today, super cute, modern and smiles a plenty with this wedding! Jennie and James had a beautiful Roman Catholic ceremony at St Peter’s Italian Church in Clerkenwell followed by a fabulous reception at Delfina in Bermondsey, London. The day was documented by Catherine Mead who not only captures the beauty of a wedding day but the true personalities and love between this couple and all the lovely moments and touches throughout, “I think Catherine was the best decision I made!  Apart from saying yes of course.”

Jennie and James had a unique fusion of Italian traditions with vintage fun “My theme was sort of 1950’s London meets Italy.  My dad’s side of the family are Italian hence the Italian church and the Italian theme. A mix on vintage and Italy – a white wedding but with an informal air.  We just wanted people to have fun but to really come away thinking how ‘Jen and James’ that day was.”

The dress! Isn’t this the sweetest prettiest 50s tulle design? Jennie chose this fun and oh so girly dress from one of the best vintage dress suppliers in London, Elizabeth Avey My dress was an original 1950’s vintage dress.  My mum and I spent a day out trying on dresses in three different dress shops all vintage as I knew that is what I wanted.  Elizabeth’s was the last dress shop we went to.  I had found a dress in each of the previous two shops, which I loved and thought, might be the one.  My appointment at Elizabeth’s was at 6pm so I was quite tired by this time.  Trying on even more dresses began to confuse me.  However, when I put on my dress and came out to show my mum, mum said there was a renewed energy about me and I came out prancing around like a show horse.  I didn’t want to take it off.  I just knew I had found the one, a mix of tulle and Chantilly lace.  It was perfect!

My headdress was a 1950’s inspired headdress made from original 1950’s broaches from Vintage Headdresses .  I wore pearl earrings, which I borrowed from my mum.  My bracelet was from Butler and Wilson.  James’ mum gave my necklace to me – James’ dad bought it for her many years ago.  It was very sentimental as James’ dad passed away when James was young.”

“I didn’t really have a colour scheme apart from a LOTS of colour.  My florist described the colour scheme as a riot of Technicolor!  Like when films were first in colour and the sky was so blue compared to a girls overly red lips.” Colourful London Wedding at Delfina by Catherine Mead Photography Colourful London Wedding at Delfina by Catherine Mead Photography Colourful London Wedding at Delfina by Catherine Mead Photography Colourful London Wedding at Delfina by Catherine Mead Photography Colourful London Wedding at Delfina by Catherine Mead Photography Colourful London Wedding at Delfina by Catherine Mead Photography Colourful London Wedding at Delfina by Catherine Mead Photography Colourful London Wedding at Delfina by Catherine Mead Photography

“The whole day was the best day of my life!  Particular moments included my dad actually giving me away. I couldn’t stop shaking but he was as nervous as me!   First seeing James at the alter.  He says my bottom lip was trembling but he was pleased I kept it together otherwise he said he would have broken down.  James’ mum and brother welcomed me formally into the family by giving me a signet ring with the family crest on during the best mans speech.  That was very moving.  James telling me I looked beautiful when he first saw me!”

The events space venue was the perfect blank canvas for Jennie and James, who wanted to transform the space into their own style, “Delfina is a very contemporary venue in a very quirky part of town.  It is a restaurant but with a large white room which can almost be treated like a blank canvas.  James and I wanted somewhere we could make our own and really show off who we are as a couple.  The team there have great experience in putting on all sorts of events so are a great help and inspiration.  There was a great black and white checker board dance floor which I loved and you could do all sorts with the lighting there which really made the room.  There was also a really cool outside space, which is sometimes hard to find in the heart of London.  Also with me being from London living in London it was important for us to have it in this city”.

Both Jennie and James put lots of thought and effort into their stationery and made all the items themselves! “I made my table plan, menus, place cards and table name cards.  My table plan was actually an old garden gate, which I painted white.  In front of the gate I had two old tea crate that had been planted up by the florist.  One crate had our names and wedding date and the second one said please take your seats.  We decorated menus and placecards with paper roses but we also and I bought vintage looking typewriter stamps and stamped out each of the place names with these stamps. Our table name signs were photos of James and I holding up signs with the table names on, we named the table’s places that meant things to us, so the street we first lived on.  As well names of our parents house, towns they live or business they own – this linked back to our invites. I also placed individual bags of sweets for every guest in pink and white striped paper bags.

This last photo caught my eye as it just sums up such a happy day, and it also happens to be one of the bride’s favourite moments too “One of my favourite photos is a black and white one of our first dance.  James is spinning me round and I am really laughing.”

Just when you think the night could be over as your guests are leaving, and the evening comes to a close…not for this couple! Jennie and James finished the night at a nearby Salsa club with close friends and family “There was an old couple in the club who were regulars.  The man took hold of me and the women took James and the whole club made space for us on the dance floor and they taught us a dance.  They then told us their secret to a long lasting marriage, which was never forget to laugh.”

What a perfect end to a perfect day! Congratulations to Jennie and James and huge thanks to photographer Catherine Mead for sharing this beautiful day.

Annie + James – Gastropub wedding for a Temperley London bride

Posted by & filed under London Weddings, Real Weddings.

Chic Gastropub Celebration by Caught The Light_0009

A short but oh so sweet wedding today! The very stylish Annie and James were married in June last year with the day captured beautifully by Emma Jane at Caught The Light photography. A stylish city wedding, with a gastro pub reception, Annie and James wanted the day to be relaxed and with the help of their wonderful friends and family, all helped to bring the day together. And look at that blue sky, how lucky they were. Now come on and hurry up Spring!

I have to mention Annie’s beautiful style, that soft rust coloured Temperley gown is simply stunning and I love her neat ballerina bun! Brides, just goes to show you don’t have to wear white on your wedding day, I love the soft colours on Annie and the complimenting bridesmaids in rose also. So pretty!

From Annie: “When we started planning our wedding we decided that we wanted a relaxed day without too many formalities, having a really great celebration with close friends and family was the most important thing to us. I was brought up in London, and we are both foodies so a Town Hall wedding followed by a reception at a gastro pub seemed perfect. We did nearly everything ourselves and with friends – the invitations, the flowers, decorating the pub etc, James even DJ’d at the party in the evening all of which made the day feel even more special and very personal to us.”

What was the most special moment of the day? Walking back down the aisle together, knowing we were married.

What music did you walk down the aisle to?  An excerpt from the opera Cavalleria Rusticana (chosen for us by my mum).

Do you have any planning advice for other brides? Decide which elements are important to you from the beginning and focus on those.   I decided I didn’t want too long to stew over tiny details – we planned our wedding in 5 months. Remind yourself that this is your only chance to do this. It’s such an exciting time and the only time in your life you will be made to feel so special, so enjoy!

Congratulations to Annie and James on a wonderfully relaxed but stylish celebration and thanks to the super Emma Jane at Caught The Light – thanks for sharing this day!

Jaia + Tom – Old Hollywood Glamour Wedding at The Century Club London

Posted by & filed under Aisle Style, London Weddings, Real Weddings.

Jaia and Tom had a chic ceremony and reception at London’s Century Club and put it all together in just 4 months, I love Jaia’s style – beautiful Old Hollywood Glamour which sets the tone perfectly for this popular members club. Clair Estelle captured their day perfectly.

“We agreed early on that we wanted the day to be really colourful, and relaxed, without too much matching or theming. I love all things vintage, but we also wanted it to feel modern and reflect who we are. Century was exactly what we were after as a venue, with its eclectic style and colourful relaxed atmosphere. We originally intended to have a Town Hall wedding, but we were a bit haphazard in our approach arranging the wedding in only 4 months, and couldn’t get the date we wanted at any central registrars, so we had the ceremony at Century too which actually was perfect.”

Jaia looked stunning in her chic and elegant vintage inspired Jenny Packham dress, I love all the detailing and bejewelled sleeves and with her gorgeous long locks she looks she is the epitome of Old Hollywood Glamour, “I’m really happy with my dress which was the Eve dress from Jenny Packham, I had wanted something vintage and also considered getting one made, but in the end the bridesmaids vote went to this one, and I have to agree!”

Jaia did her own make-up and accessorised her beautiful Eve dress with earrings by Glitzy Secrets, and the sweetest little clutch from Annie’s Vintage in Islington. As a last minute addition she also wore a vintage hair clip which was borrowed last minute from one of the bridesmaid’s Rachelle – the perfect finishing touch, thank goodness for fabulous bridesmaids!

Bridesmaids dresses are always a tall order, and this meant they had to search just that little bit harder and across the pond! “I had an idea that I wanted the bridesmaids in different dresses, so we decided to look for the same dress in three different colours. It was quite a task to find a dress that everyone liked in colours that looked good together, we trawled the internet and the high Street! BHLDN had lots of options, but they don’t have a uk shop so I had to order them from the states and get them fitted. This was probably the most stressful thing to organise mainly because of the lead-time, I left it quite late, but I really like the cut and I just love the colours, especially the peach (and the pink, and the silver!).”  I love the dresses but it is worth bearing in mind that ordering online you may always have to bear in mind charges for alterations! Each of the girls also wore bracelets by Frosted Willow on Etsy.

I’ve attended weddings where a member of the family or close friend has sung for them during the ceremony and it’s been the most moving and memorable moment, even for me as a guest. Jaia’s cousin and bridesmaid, Anna sang ‘Sea of Love’ [Cat Power's arrangement] and I can only imagine how beautiful and emotional this was, especially for Tom “Toms friend Matt accompanied her using Tom’s mothers guitar. It was so beautiful, our guests said it sent shivers down their spine to hear Anna’s soulful voice coming from the back of the room. This was one of the most special things about the wedding for both of us.”

“Tom was really touched that we included the guitar which had belonged to his mother, since she died when he was a child. I had asked Matt to play it as a kind of surprise so that there was a sense of her included in the day, however small. He says that was his most special part of the day.”

“My favourite thing was seeing everyone I love in the same room together as I walked in. It was really exciting and special, it was worth all the build up just for that moment. The intimate space of the rooms at Century really added to that. And of course, actually being married, that was a pretty special moment too! “

Jaia arranged the bouquets, corsages and large floral arrangements herself and also had a bit of help with the buttonholes and table arrangements from friends the night before!

Some simple and tasty favours were offered to guests, made by the bride and groom, “We Made little pots of different kinds of jam to serve both as place-names for the tables and favours, (it only took two weekends, it was a lot more work than I expected, even though jam is pretty easy to make). We designed labels with each guests name printed on them and tried to give everyone their favourite flavour if we knew what it was. The different colours looked great on the tables.” A reminder to those DIY brides that things always take longer than you think!

“We had little sets of origami paper and instructions on how to make different origami animals on each table, lots of people had a go and it kept the children entertained as well as adding to the colourful look we were after. We also set up our own ‘photo-booth’ after the meal with a bit of technical help from one of the groomsmen, – just a camera on a tripod and lights set up to be self operated with a remote control and timer, and we supplied dress ups and props to make it more fun. It  was a real hit, guests were lining up to have a go and the resulting photos were fab. The self-operation meant that people did all kinds of silly things without feeling self-conscious.”

“We didn’t have a first dance because we fundamentally disagreed about it (I wanted to take dancing classes and Tom refused) so instead we invited everyone to join us on the dance floor for The Doors ‘Touch me’. After that we had an hour of 50′s rock and Roll to get the party started, which went down really well with all ages, almost everyone was up dancing early on.”

Advice…

“There are a few things I might have done differently in hindsight, and we had a small problem with spotify dropping out during the ceremony music ( I recommend using an ipod). Century hosts a lot of events and because they are a members club we had limited access to the venue so i had to pull a favour and get some friends to go and set up early on the day, which I would have liked to do myself the night before, in a perfect world.” Always think about access for your venue and worth checking early on if you are planning to do decorate heavily as ideally don’t want to be lifting a finger on your wedding day!

Useful Tip…

As a wedding planner of course I love a good list or spreadsheet, and it really is so useful especially keeping track between you both “Google docs/ Google Drive /Google Calendar were all really useful. It meant that Tom could see what I had scheduled or estimated in the budget, and we could both work on things separately when we had a spare half hour.”

Congratulations Jaia and Tom and thanks again to their photographer Clair Estelle“Clair did a wonderful job documenting the day for us, she was so calm gentle and sweet through the whole day and never stopped snapping. We have some lovely pics.”

Tiggy + James – A Pretty Preston Court Wedding

Posted by & filed under Real Weddings.

So long snow! I’m all about the blue skies and summer days here on the blog! Today’s lovely couple had a beautiful wedding in Kent at one of my favourite venues, Preston Court. With the fabulous carousel taking centre stage outside, the indoor barn is both rustic and beautiful – perfect for Tiggy and James who wanted an informal and relaxed day. Having been married before and with the bride being 4 months pregnant [doesn't she look so radiant?!] they knew they wanted to make the day less traditional and more personal and judging by the gorgeous images by Lee at Robbins Photographic it certainly looks just that.

Summer days of sipping drinks outside on a lawn, with a carousel merrily spinning around, it’s hard to imagine now in this wild wintry weather but it was the perfect spot for Tiggy and James last July. “James and I fell in love with Preston Court on a rainy day in March and knew if we loved it then it would be even more magical in the summer. We really wanted the day to be as relaxed and informal as possible. Being the second time for us both we were keen not to be too traditional and make it different and personal. We loved the fact that guests could walk out of the church straight onto the lawn in front of the house and have a drink in their hands in minutes. The carousel was a really fun and quirky touch and provided some great photos! The barn, the long tables and the bbq added to the relaxed feeling of the day, and it was brilliant to have people involved who understood our vision for the day.”

Tiggy looks stunning in her sweet 1960s vintage dress from those fabulous ladies at Fur Coat No Knickers and you’d never know there was a little baby bump to accommodate for! “I chose a short dress as I wanted something different, and the girls at Fur Coat No Knickers could not have been more brilliant. The dress we found was a 1960s style and was originally long, with long sleeves! They understood exactly what I pictured and were able to customise it perfectly. They were even un-phased when I had to tell them that I would be walking up the aisle 4 months pregnant and reassured me that the dress would still fit! They also helped design and make my net veil, as well providing vintage clips for my shoes and a vintage hairband.” I love how they create a whole look that fits together so perfectly and is so unique to each bride. I absolutely adore her bow short veil too!

LB_RobbinsPhotographic_TiggyJames_0007 LB_RobbinsPhotographic_TiggyJames_0008 LB_RobbinsPhotographic_TiggyJames_0009 Preston Court Carousel Wedding Kent LB_RobbinsPhotographic_TiggyJames_0010 LB_RobbinsPhotographic_TiggyJames_0011 LB_RobbinsPhotographic_TiggyJames_0012 LB_RobbinsPhotographic_TiggyJames_0013LB_RobbinsPhotographic_TiggyJames_0031 LB_RobbinsPhotographic_TiggyJames_0032

The perfect little church that resides just across from the venue meant Tiggy and James had the best of both worlds for their wedding, “We ideally wanted to get married in a church and although Preston Court does civil ceremonies, the fact that the beautiful St Mildred’s church was on site seemed perfect. The reverend took the time to get to know us over the months before our wedding and this made the whole service so personal. Euphoric flowers filled the little parish church with lavender and candles and it looked incredible. My sisters sang during the signing of the register and the size of the church made the whole ceremony really intimate.”

To be fair with this venue, the magnificent organ feature is so striking it doesn’t need much decorating but I love the complimentary hues of blues of the beautiful blooms by Euphoric Flowers and the huge light up letters. “James and I both love the colour blue, so the theme revolved around blue and white. All our bouquets were very simple and featured white sweetpeas which were my grandmother’s favourite flower. They also perfectly fitted the relaxed, country, vintage feel we wanted to create with the flowers. We brought our own hanging baskets and wooden tubs of cornflowers that my mum had planted to the courtyard outside the barn, and it was brilliant how the venue is a blank canvas and we were allowed to do whatever we wanted.”

We drank Prosecco and pimms at the reception and wine with the bbq, but then there was a separate barn with a bar for everyone after to get stuck into drinking whatever they wanted afterwards! We decided against a cake as we wanted to spend the money on nice pudding and really delicious cheese instead! The bbq was incredible and we ate ribeye steaks, and beautifully marinated lamb with an array of interesting salads.

As well as the carousel we used the wedding smashers for our after dinner music. They were brilliant and got everybody dancing. We were able to sit down with them before hand and give them an idea of what we did and didn’t want to hear.

QUICK Q&A…

What was your budget: £25k

What music did you walk down the aisle to? The Trumpet Tune, Henry Purcell.(very traditional) But then we walked out to The Beatles “Love Love me do”

Do you have any planning advice for other brides? If you involve other people make sure they share your vision and you’re on the same wavelength, it should be a fun and exciting process. Talk to your fiancée, it is more stressful if you have lots of secrets and surprises. All the fun came from us doing things together.

What was the most special or memorable moment of the day? The most memorable moment of the day was when James and I walked round the corner from having champagne on the lawn to see all our guests on the merry-go-round in the sunshine! It was so magical and everyone was just beaming! The most special was saying our vows, I literally forgot everyone was there watching!

What was your first dance song? We decided to have a last dance rather than a first dance, so the last song before we left for the night was “Fix You” by Coldplay and we ended up surrounded by everyone singing too, it was a really moving day way to end the night

What unique touches did you bring to your wedding? Only James and I gave speeches rather than the traditional ones, which was a different touch to hear from the bride! We also put face paints and glow bangles as favours on the table which was briliant as at the end of the night, everyone was covered in neon face paints, it made for some great photos and created a real party atmosphere on the dance floor.

Congratulations to Tiggy and James [and on their new addition!] on a beautiful fun wedding day and thanks to Lee at Robbins Photographic for sharing this wedding on London Bride.
