Not everyone couple who gets engaged loves the idea of a wedding, in fact this couple cringed at the thought of their ‘special day’ but with some creativity, personal influences and keeping true to themselves Jac and Chris had exactly the day they wanted, on a small budget and they can now say that their wedding was indeed a very special day. A short but sweet feature, with photography by the lovely Heather at Brighton Photo.
“Before we got married we didn’t like weddings. Every time somebody said ‘your special day’ we both cringed. We wanted to do something that reflected us as a couple. It wasn’t about trying to be different; it was about being true to ourselves. So it had to be in London, and we had to find a way to have all our friends and family with us without spending too much. We had to have great music, great food, fabulous photos and lots of wine. Oh, and we both had to look amazing. Love and London conquered all and we managed the impossible. We are now converted – it really is a very special day.”
Looking at this gorgeous bride you would never think for a moment she was in a dress from the high street for under £500… but she is! Resourceful Jac sourced her glitter sequin wedding dress from high street store Coast from their ‘Couture’ range. She removed a pink flower and added a very chic red sash to give it that touch of Old Hollywood Glamour. She paired the dress with a fabulous pair of vivid red shoes from Jimmy Choo and a vintage fur jacket that was bought for just £80 from a stall in Angel. Quite the bargain hunter!
Unusually Jac and Chris decided to walk down the aisle together as a couple for their Town Hall ceremony which melted their nerves away “Old Marylebone Town Hall was very accommodating and let Chris and I meet in a beautiful room before we walked down the aisle together. Chris always says that the best part of the day was when I walked into the room and we had a couple of minutes together just the two of us before the ceremony. I agree, as soon as I saw him I didn’t feel nervous anymore, just really happy.”
“We didn’t have a gift list but instead asked friends to help us with our wedding. We have friends with many talents who kindly DJ’d, sang, did our tailoring, made the cake, did my make up, provided vintage china and decorations, and a million other things and this all made it possible for us to have the wedding that we wanted. They all do these things for a living so offering their services for free was incredibly generous of them. We couldn’t have done it without them. It made the day really special.”
Jac and Chris were determined to find a venue that suited them and their guest list and after compromising with a later ceremony they found the perfect place “It took us 8 months to find the venue, and on our search we quickly realised that we couldn’t stay in budget if we had a sit down meal so we decided to get married later in the day at 4pm, have a finger buffet and spend the bulk of our money on the bar! The wine was still flowing late into the night and we arranged for a late licence until 2am so the party could go on. Determination and a firm believe that anything is possible in London got us through the hard days – London never lets you down!”
“My very good friend, Heather Nimmo, who is an actress and singer, sang Make You Feel My Love by Adele. We also had lots of Motown classics playing all day and when Al Green’s Let’s Stay Together came on only Chris and I knew what it meant.”
Words of advice from the bride… “Decide what you want to do, ignore everybody else and just find a way to make it happen! People said we couldn’t walk down the aisle together but we did it anyway. They said I wouldn’t find a dress for under £2k – I found one for £450 and felt a million dollars. They said we couldn’t possibly get married at 4pm – guess what? We could and we did!”
As well as being a lovely wedding this is a reminder that there are no rules when it comes to weddings [other than the ahem legal bit!] – you really can do things however you want and I’m so pleased Jac and Chris were able to do just that. Many congratulations to you!
