Alice in Wonderland Islington Metalworks Wedding by Babb Photo

It’s always fun to see how couples put their spin on their wedding day, and the lovely Roger and Sarah were inspired to put a little bit of Alice in Wonderland magic to their Islington Metalworks wedding! “Although we didn’t initially want a theme we saw photos of an Alice in Wonderland wedding on the Metalworks website and thought that it looked great and we loved the idea of it being a wedding for people who are a little bit twisted!” This winter wedding is full of creative details that work so well in the venue and must have been a great talking point for all the guests, especially all those amazing cakes!

“We went with Laura at Babb Photo for the photography because she represented very good value for money is highly professional and has a cool style of photography which is unobtrusive but also ‘real’ and not over polished”. The atmosphere we were aiming for was warm and inclusive, hence we had big rows of tables rather than small circular tables. We also had lots of different styles of music throughout the day which included a jazz band, jukebox hour where the guests selected their choices ahead of the day as well as a Moroccon band which kicked off the evening then a DJ into the late hours!

The bride Sarah chose an elegant figure flattering lace dress with ribbon detail and an unusual brooch bouquet by Love Bouquet which I think made the perfect accessory for a winter’s wedding with all the sparkle. The bride went for a dress that she knew her groom would love to see her in, “The dress was meant to be something elegant and strapless as that was one of Roger’s stipulations!” The Islington Metal Works is an unusual and quirky venue and was the perfect backdrop for this creatively themed wedding and also great as it’s close in location to the Town Hall where they held their ceremony. “We chose the Metal Works as we initially went to look at hotels and just felt that they lacked spirit so started looking on the internet for warehouse weddings. Islington was a great choice because it is such a lovely area and guests who were staying the night before had plenty of choice on where to go out.

Sarah was lucky enough to have some very talented friends involved in her wedding, and she has some great advice “Allow your friends to show how talented they are by helping out. It makes it more personable, but give them space to be creative as putting too much pressure on them only puts people off.” Along with tables of sweets, there were a selection of amazing cakes which featured Cheshire Cats and playing cards which were made by a friend and her very talented bridesmaid created a special Alice in Wonderland wedding cake!

They also they offered guests mezze food to add to the informal atmosphere which was a great hit with the guests and the theme was all brought together by cute little ‘key’ escort cards for guests to find their seats. They also decided to do something a little bit different for their first dance and hired a Moroccan band to perform and the bride says it was a highlight of the day, “The most special part of the day had to be our first dance as we marched in with the Moroccan band!”

Congratulations to Sarah and Roger on a fabulously quirky wedding which looked such great fun and to Laura at Babb Photo  for sharing her wonderful work.

Kate + Gary – A Wintery Christmas Portland Place Wedding

WEDDINGS, Elegant

Portland Place Wedding London by Lisa Devlin

It’s soooo nice to bring such a recent wedding to the blog today thanks to photographer Lisa Devlin at Devlin Photos. Kate and Gary got married less than a month ago on a wintery December’s day in London at the beautifully classic 29 Portland Place with a relaxed reception at The Peasant Pub in the heart of creative Clerkenwell. I love the combination of a classic Georgian venue for their sweet ceremony, the pastel pretty balloons for their portrait shoot [love love love!] and then the perfect reception party at a city pub. These guys certainly fit lots in for their big day and judging by their huge smiles I’d say they are enjoying themselves..

Whilst many brides have their heart set on a warm [ahem] spring or summer wedding I’ve always thought there is such a charm and excitement about weddings in December and of course, you are always going to expect the weather to be disappointing taking the pressure off, however Kate and Gary got very lucky! I had lived in London for the last 7 years and absolutely adore the city, and as my husband is from London it felt right for us to tie the knot in the place we love the most. As soon as I started to think about the wedding I knew I wanted to have it around Christmas time (although my husband was slightly concerned about the weather) but we were extremely lucky on the day and had crisp winter sunshine.”

Whilst there are many lovely dress boutiques in London, the hunt to find the one wasn’t a great success for Kate, who was searching for a simple and comfortable dress [so she could eat lots all day, a girl after my own heart!].I discovered that J Crew had started a bridal range, so I ordered one online and it was perfect. For something a bit special, I went to Stephanie Allin Couture and had a lace shrug made for me that matched my dress perfectly. This felt really vintage and stylish. As it was cold I also got a Matthew Williamson shrug to keep me warm on the day.”

A great idea especially for a winter wedding if you think you may be a bit chilly in a strapless dress is to do what Kate did and have a custom shrug or cape made to fit with your dress. You would never tell this wasn’t all one dress and so lovely that it’s totally unique!

“We wanted to have a relaxed and fun day, and I think our venues reflected this. 29 Portland Place is a really wonderful venue to get married. I fell in love with its huge sash windows and original features and knew it was the right place for our ceremony as soon as I walked in. As this venue was quite grand, we wanted to go on to a really fun affair, and looked into lots of City pubs for our reception, but I’m so glad we used Portland Place as our first location as it felt very London and very us.”

It would seem Lisa their photographer must have a thing for balloons, as I in fact did a photoshoot with her with lots of balloons so it’s so great to see a real bride having the same fun! They look gorgeous against the stunning backdrop of Portland Place, and a great idea in case you can’t get outside in the winter months for some lovely portrait shots, “When Lisa, our photographer suggested we use some balloons for the pictures I couldn’t be more excited and I love how the pictures came out.”

“Lisa took lots of London street shots and the weather allowed us to hang around outside a bit longer than normal in December! Lisa was amazing and I particularly love the shots coming out of Portland Place in the midst of the confetti throwing.” wedding_portlandplace_london_lisadevlin_0021 wedding_portlandplace_london_lisadevlin_0027 wedding_portlandplace_london_lisadevlin_0017

I love the choice of stylish nude colours for the bridesmaids and their plaited hair styles, not to mention that cute shrug on the flower girl, “My bridesmaids had high street dresses, and I wanted them to be comfortable and be able to keep the dresses and shrugs to wear again. Kaz Fernando did our hair and makeup on the day (which I loved), she was very accommodating as we all wanted plaits which actually looked really lovely as a theme.”

Sometimes as much as us girls plan, the boys do occasionally throw a curveball in to the mix…“My flowers started as pinks, lilacs and creams, but then my husband went to hire his suit and remembered last minute to tell me they had picked a maroon tie, which luckily the florist was accommodating in helping me change my order to match his choice and we ended up with lovely winter colour bouquets!”

After a short trip on a routemaster whilst singing Christmas songs they arrived at their reception venue – The Peasant in Clerkenwell. “Our reception was a place me and my husband had spent many days drinking and getting to know the staff. We arrived here in a London bus (and sang to Christmas songs on the way) and the place was covered in bunting and flowers and fairy lights (all put up by the staff there) and it felt so cosy and Christmassy. Guests had a choice of dishes throughout the menu – hearty winter grub and lots of it. I can not speak highly enough about the Peasant, the food was wonderful and the service outstanding. We decided against a cake, mainly as we ordered so much food we knew nobody would eat it!”.

“We had a DJ on the evening  (Lee Harding) who was an absolute legend and had our guests dancing all night. We also hired a photo booth from Say Fromage which was a real success – the package meant a lady helped our guests all night putting their pictures into a book that I took home on the day full of their comments. A great alternative to a traditional guest book. And it was a lovely surprise to see them all uploaded online after the big day – with gradual evidence of our guests becoming more tipsy as the night went by!”

What music did you walk down the aisle to? Pachelbel Canon in D and back down to Cosmic Love, Florence and the Machine

Do you have any planning advice for other brides? Be calm at all times. I was pretty relaxed (most of the time) and I think this showed though out  the wedding day!

What was the most special or memorable moment of the day? Having my pictures taking with balloons (I felt like I was a model on a Vogue shoot!), seeing my husband when I walked down the aisle, the wedding car with my mum, lots of dancing and photobooth fun in the evening.

What was your first dance song? Silly Love Songs, by Wings

If you had any problems when planning, what were they and how did you overcome them? The only problem I had were guests chopping and changing, but that is always to be expected! My advice would be to not stress, there are always ways round it. Especially if the staff at the venues were as helpful as mine.

Aw, congratulations to the newlyweds, and happy almost one month anniversary! Thanks again to Lisa… although now, I want to go play with lots of pretty balloons…

Christmas Chez London Bride !

Lifestyle

Living in London in a top floor flat, I don’t have any of the luxuries of being able to introduce some of the ‘proper’ festive traditions such as a log fire, a beautiful wreath [I’m certain it would get nicked around here!] or even a real tree. So Christmas chez London Bride is a little more modern. We have a faux tree [no needles to sweep, straight out the loft = super easy!] and as well as discovering this burning log fire video which I use as a screensaver the boy came home with the MOST amazing candle… a log fire scented candle from Muji. Seriously, it’s like the real deal.

So other than faking the festivities, I surprisingly had a bit of time on my hands to decorate the flat, so I ‘installed’ [ahem, white-tacked!] white honeycomb tissue decorations from my hallway ceiling. As you can see from Willow Cat’s stance, we were all quite excited by them. It was a space in my flat reserved for a chandelier but I need to sort out an electrician for that [hence why said chandelier has been sat in loft for over a year]. So perhaps I might just keep them up, until I can afford an electrician?

So, suffice to say I hope you are all getting to enjoy the festivities, and if not then hopefully next week. This has been the first year in many where I have had time to do so, I’ve been to the ballet, I did a ‘Holiday’ cocktails masterclass and have been to perhaps one too many parties. Well, it would be rude not to make the most of it while it lasts…

A big shout to everyone who has kindly sent me some lovely and thoughtful Christmas cards, and also to the very sweet Rebecca at bonbon balloons for this extra special Christmas balloon delivery!

Happy festivities everyone!
