Gemma + Pete – A London Bride MC Motors Wedding

LONDON BRIDE LIFE, WEDDINGS, Urban

MC Motors Wedding London | Photography: Aneta Mak | Planning & Styling: London Bride

This MC Motors wedding was one of my all time favourite weddings to work on, it’s taken me a while to blog it as it was featured both online on Style Me Pretty and in print in You & Your Wedding magazine so a little patience to blog was required!

The East London venue, MC Motors was such a great canvas to work with (and handily around the corner from me and the couple!) but also I loved Gemma and Pete’s creative brief of ‘Distressed Elegance’ for their November wedding.

Gemma and Pete are a super stylish couple and were keen for their wedding to reflect their London lifestyle – combining their love of the urban city with but with a sophisticated, creative aesthetic and the key was very much that they wanted to enjoy their day with all their wonderful friends and family.

I thought I’d share a few of the early concept boards which I created for them, which is nice to look back on and in fact I’d like to think we stayed quite close to the initial concepts!

Many of the elements which I proposed in the boards such as wild ivy, hanging festoons, gold foiled stationery and berry florals were all final elements included in the wedding.

Overall the day was full of fun, food style and sophistication all captured in effortless and timeless fine art photography from Aneta Mak, who shoots mainly on film which really does just add to the beauty of it all…

Gemma and her bridesmaids got ready at the Town Hall Hotel in Bethnal Green. They chose one of the amazing apartments so that all the girls could have their hair and make up done together whilst sipping on bubbles of course! The fantastic Sev at Hepburn Collection created a beautiful modern classic up-do, whilst Mariam Jensen gave Gemma a flawless radiant complexion.
Gemma’s stunning gown and veil were by Halfpenny London, an effortless fit on her, the elegant fabric draped just perfectly, teamed with a thick sash which tied in a bow, and for the ceremony she chose to combine with the sweet lace overlay shrug which provided beautiful detailing for the back.
As a hint to the lace accents of Gemma’s dress, the bridesmaids wore Navy lace dresses from Whistles which were perfect for winter city chic. Being Scottish, some of the groomsmen and Father of the Bride sported kilts whilst the groom incorporated a touch of the bride’s heritage with his tartan tie.

The ceremony took place at the beautiful art-deco Town Hall in Islington, after which guests were treated to Champagne aboard a London Routemaster bus to the warehouse wedding reception at MC Motors in Hackney.

The bride and groom had some precious time together along with their photographer Aneta Mak who captured these stunning portraits. I remember just how much they were beaming after the ceremony and these images of them are just so incredibly romantic. That location is just perfection!

As the guests arrived into the street-like atrium bar, they were treated to ale and Champagne as well as oysters, shucked by hand and served by Oystermeister. As a surprise, we then arranged to have the couple arrive in their London taxi straight into the al-fresco style area which was such a fun moment as we lifted the shutters at their arrival to a round of applause!
We transformed the warehouse, which is essentially a film and photographic location, into two decadent spaces for drinking and for dining and dancing. Whilst the adults were enjoying the reception we also created a room for the young children to play, create and watch cartoons in which I have to say is a welcome addition for most parents when at a wedding!
In keeping with the theme we wanted to use the structure of the room to create atmosphere so The Flower Appreciation Society draped beautiful ivy from the industrial walls, poles and ceiling beams scattered with dahlias and festoon lighting was hung to provide warm lighting for the dark winter’s evening. There were thoughtful touches such as taxi cards so that guests could make their way home safely and for a nightcap there was of course an abundance of Scottish whisky served on a whisky trolley for those wanting a break from the dancefloor!

As huge foodies, the catering was a key element to the day and the menu reflected their love of enjoying London’s culinary delights with home-made terrines by the Groom’s brother (who is a chef), spit roast chickens, indulgent cheese boards and a hearty evening hog roast. With the meal taking centre stage, inspired by indulgent supper clubs, the table decorations were elegant but with a relaxed bistro feel. Antique brass candlesticks and cut glass decanters for the wine added a decadence to the styling among the relaxed berry florals.
The menus which were each tied with a mini sparkler to be used for the toast, completed the bespoke gold foiled and screen printed stationery suite onto rustic brown kraft paper which I worked with a designer to create, and the couples friend hand drew the table plan onto an ornate mirror for a touch of luxury and a focal point for the guests.

After some amusing and heartfelt speeches, for the evening, Gemma swopped her delicate lace shrug for beautiful embellished and sparkling detail for a glamorous transformation ready for the first dance. A true Scottish party wouldn’t be complete without a ceilidh so after dinner guests took part in a traditional (and very lively!) dance followed by a brilliant DJ party set by the Wedding Smashers.
It was such a fun wedding with a great team that was true to the couples style. They’ve just celebrated their first anniversary so congrats Gemma and Pete and of course huge thanks to the wonderfully talented Aneta Mak for letting me share the beautiful images.

Swinging summer East London Wedding at The Tab Venue

WEDDINGS, Modern

East London Wedding by Anushé Low

Ever since I turned 30, I seem to have suddenly developed a total obsession with jazz and swing music. I think it may have had something to do with my own proposal [long story, which I’ve yet to tell on these pages!] but I love it and soak it up at any given chance! Of course, where better to experience swing or jazz than at a wedding? It gets everyone of all ages up on their feet, and it really does make for an evening glued to the dancefloor. Well, Sally and Cian clearly love their swing too and incorporated this into their wedding along with so many other gorgeous details for a wonderful day of celebrations at their wedding at the Tab Venue in Hackney. Have you ever seen a bride beam so big? A groom so dapper? And don’t get me started on those desserts… beautiful photography by the lovely and talented Anushé Low.

Rather than opt for the traditional big, princess style dress, Sally opted for a beautiful fitted gown from Amanda Wakeley’s evening collection. She accessoriesd with a bracelet which was an engagement gift and actually made the earrings herself! Instead of a veil, Sally’s sister’s friend designed with her and created a pretty bird-cage veil for her for that all important finishing touch. I absolutely love the bright and cheerful colours of the pink and yellow flowers together set off beautifully with the greens by Flower Power.

Sally and Cian held their wedding ceremony at the Town Hall Hotel in Bethnal Green [a regular cool London wedding venue featured here on London Bride!] and the ceremony was as elegant as the surroundings. I love the shots of the lifting of the veil and the kiss, so romantic and such a lovely intimate ceremony for all the guests to witness.

Such beautiful and natural portraits of Sally and Cian, who took some time out for a wonder nearby and have you seen such dapper ushers? I love the attention to small details such as their pocket squares and even a pocket watch! Very dapper indeed!

The delicious antipasti food was perfect for guests to snack on whilst the bubbles flowed and the guests spilled out onto the small outdoor terrace for some sunshine!

Sally and Cian wanted to have a relaxed, summer wedding with a vintage feel and who would know you are in the centre of a fairly busy/urban area of Shoreditch in this little spot, especially with the cute outdoor space adorned with bunting! I should point out that I do believe the Tab venue is currently undergoing some developments so anyone thinking of it for hire, do please get in touch with them first and visit.

A cheap and easy way to inject some colour is with the bright yellow napkins and simply tied with striped ribbon add a lovely touch of elegance and detail to the tables. The cute little seashells on the tables were the favours to the guests and had been collected by the couple over their many holidays spent together and each was assigned to the most suited guests. Such a sweet idea and so thoughtful! I love the explosion of bunting, fairy lights and paper pom poms – they really help to turn a blank space into one full of personality and charm.

In keeping with the informal space for the reception venue, guests tucked into one of the bride’s favourite meals – a curry. Yum! They also had a nake cake adorned with fruits and mini puddings for guests to tuck into. I cannot tell you how hungry these have made me, they look just mouthwatering and such beautiful images of them too!

Of course if one is going to be on the dancefloor all night, then one has to have their dancing shoes on… and a second dress for that matter! Sally slipped into a short, full skirted number which was inspired from Cian’s Hungarian culture where the tradition is that the bride changes into a red dress for the dance at the wedding and for the men to twirl her around! It certainly looks like there was a lot of twirling going on here for their first song, Buenos Sera by Louis Prima.

Helen + Owen – Theatrical Princelet Street Wedding

WEDDINGS, Urban

LB_HelenOwen_MckinleyRodgers_0040

Today’s mysterious wedding had the magic captured by Pen and Cam of McKinley Rodgers whom I had the pleasure of meeting the other week at LWE. These guys are utterly lovely as well as super talented,  and if you are looking for laid-back, honest photography then do go check more of their beautiful work! You can also see them over there on the right hand side too as I’m thrilled to welcome them as a new sponsor of London Bride!

So back to this amazing wedding…. being a bit of a film fanatic and someone who studied performance [yes indeed!], I often imagine my wedding day playing in my head like a film [anyone else do that!?]. The atmosphere, the camera cuts from guests, to me and my new husband, the score, the immaculate fashion and of course….The Set. Well, this little gem of a London wedding is pretty much like something out of a film, with all those elements but especially The Set. No surprises then, bride Helen is a designer in the theatre world….and it certainly looked like the most wonderful stage ever for a wedding day.

Helen and Owen had a winter wedding ceremony in December at Islington Town Hall, wrapped up in their warm coats, they were showered with a rainbow of confetti. A musical parade towards a shiny red bus then took them to the MOST mysterious venue I’ve ever seen. And there followed an evening of candlelight, acoustic music, dancing, cheese, mulled wine and lots of love and laughter.

Helen’s lovely 60s embellished gown for the ceremony was an original vintage item from The Vintage Wedding Dress Company [now Charlie Brear VWDC – I know we have similar names, so weird!]. She teamed the dress with sentimental accessories from both her grandmothers. What better way to wrap up warm against the harsh British winter than with a beautiful vintage fur coat too?

From the bride, Helen: “Our day began at The Boundary Hotel E1, we took cars to the Town Hall, my best girls with me. Dad at my side. I sourced the bridesmaids accessories from Spitalfields markets and Grays Antique market, their dresses were found scouring Ebay and Dad hired a three piece suit from The Manchester Exchange Theatre. I borrowed furs from a friend who works at a theatre near us.”

“It rained, which was moody and enchanting along the cobbled streets of Spitalfields, we had moments of sun as we came out of the ceremony for photos, and during the procession from our bus to the reception lead by musician mates Aruhan and Gwen. We all cosied up by the fires and candlelight in Princelet Street and feasted on Roast Beef, mulled wine and delicious mince pies, wheels of cheese and port.”

I’m a freelance designer for the theatre, so I approached the day as I would a set and costume design. It was very important to us that the day was intimate, romantic and partly a mystery for our guests. The reception was a well known but off the beaten track film location. We hired it for the day and danced within its tumbling and atmospheric walls.

Owen and I couldn’t have been more happy on the day with the support of our families and friends. Thank you to all the talented people we know!”

What an amazing day, so intimate, romantic and definitely air an of mystery about it. Thank you to gorgeous couple Owen and Helen for sharing their day and and the credits are a testament to the talented and kind friends and family who were a part of the day too.  Thanks to fab photographer’s McKinley Rodgers.

A Little East London Wedding at Hackney Town Hall

WEDDINGS, Informal

Of course we all love to swoon over details details and more details, but in fact, we should all remember that a wedding is about a marriage and I really do enjoy seeing this more than anything. This intimate and casual East London wedding of Marina and Adrian reminded me – it’s about two people, and their friends and family all celebrating their love. I think photographer Lisa-Jane captures the complete essence of this Hackney Town Hall wedding, with lots of love and laughter and a very radiant bride and groom…
