Bright and Cheerful Hampton Court House Wedding

Whilst the sky may be grey and dreary at the moment, this wedding has cheered my day up no end! Such a beautiful bright, colourful wedding full of personality and cheer. Jo and Greg were married at the beautiful Hampton Court House earlier in June this year. The very talented ladies at Cotton Candy Weddings captured the day in all it’s multi-coloured splendour so perfectly and of course those radiant just-married smiles from the gorgeous bride and groom. I also have to mention the bursting-with-brightness blooms by Steph at Fairy Nuff Flowers who created the most stunning arrangements in those sunshine shades that bring so much cheer to the day.

Having met in Spain Jo and Greg incorporated some subtle influences of Granada into their day “There wasn’t really a theme but Greg and I met in Granada in Spain so a lot of the decorations and the table plan had a Granada theme to them such as Morrocan lanterns etc. When we started planning our wedding we started with the guest list and went from there. We wanted it to be as fun and relaxed as possible whilst still recognising the fact that it was obviously a very important occasion!

Jo looked picture-perfect in her ‘Willow’ by Jenny Packham dress with the chic but sexy sheer back detailing and feminine fit, which she discovered at Miss Bush Bridalwear boutique in Surrey.

Finding my dress was a more stressful process than I had assumed it would be, it feels like there a lot of pressure to look perfect on the day and there’s just too much choice! The Willow dress by Jenny Packham was actually one of the first dresses I saw on the internet when I started looking and was just much more me than the corseted designs I tried, relaxed yet covered in sequins! I got it from Miss Bush, which I would highly recommend to everyone, Emma really knows what she’s talking about!

I’m sure like myself, your eye has been caught on those amazing Miu Miu shoes with the jewel decorated heels, practical and oh-so pretty! My beautiful Miu Miu shoes were a replacement for a pair of stilettos I was going to wear but got more and more worried about being able to walk in. The block heel was perfect and I wore them all day and night, even walking home in them across a field.

Jo accessorised her outfit with some lovely meaningful items borrowed from her cousin and Mum. My Alex Monroe pear necklace was borrowed from my beautiful Maid of Honour Ellie (also my cousin), who graciously lent it to me for the day (I’m not sure I gave her much choice!). My watch is an old one of my Mum’s that I used to covet. I think I was about 7 when I first told her that I wanted to wear it when I got married!

Jo’s love for colour on her big day was all inspired from the early bridesmaid dresses purchase! I absolutely love the colour on her lovely ladies and the flowers are just so cheery, perfect for a June wedding. It’s probably obvious from the photos that I love bright colours. The bridesmaids’ dresses were one of the first things I bought, about a week after we got engaged! My friend works at Whistles and she knew I like Orange so she showed them to me and they started the colour scheme for the whole wedding! My nieces completely stole the show in their John Lewis dresses with little rings of gypsophila made by our florist, Steph.

Greg looked sharp in a Gieves and Hawkes suit that was provided by the bride’s brother, Simon who runs Permanent Style, which is very handy as this man knows a thing or two about menswear!

I’m not sure there is anything like having live music and singing for a ceremony. Somehow the atmosphere really is quite heightened with emotion, and with such personal and meaningful readings it would appear there weren’t many dry eyes during this special ceremony.

The ceremony itself was perfect, made even better by The Tiffinians (an acapella group from a local school) singing as my Dad and I entered, that was definitely a moment I’ll never forget – it was beautiful and veery emotional. The readings were also very special. My Aunt read a poem which my Grandad wrote to us in reply to our wedding invitation, which was always going to be emotional! Greg’s sister read ‘He’s not perfect’ by Bob Marley (which I had chosen for Greg without his knowledge) and my Brother read ‘Dance me to the end of love’ by Leonard Cohen, which he managed to fill with such emotion it had the family crying at the very least. Finally we walked out to ‘Waiting for as star’ by Boy meets Girl, an 80s classic chosen because it’s the song at the end of Three Men and a Little Lady when they get married, a film both of us loved growing up.

They chose the beautiful Hampton Court House for their wedding for the elegant yet relaxed setting and picturesque gardens and outdoor patio to enjoy a drinks reception. The green gardens provided the perfect setting for the lovely portait photos with their photographers, Gem and Phil from Cotton Candy Weddings.

I found them just searching the internet and loved their reportage style. What I particularly like about their photos is their use of light, as well as their ability to catch all the best moments. They are also very subtle, we didn’t know they were there half the time!

You can’t fail to have a smile on your face when surrounded by such beautiful flowers, gold glitter decorations and…..flamingoes! I love the DIY gold paper lanterns that Jo made just from spray painting – they add that touch of luxe to the humble white lantern!

I made most of the decorations for the wedding (with a lot of help from a few friends and family in particular!). We started collecting jam jars to cover in gold glitter about a year in advance, I think Greg thought I’d gone mad – we’re still finding glitter all over my parents’ house. One of my favourite things we made was the lanterns for the roof of the conservatory which we sprayed with gold spray paint, focusing on the top to create a graduated effect, not all of my ideas worked out as well! I think Greg was also worried about me when I told him I wanted to get plastic lawn flamingos and flamingo cocktail servers but it all came together in the end and I hope made people smile.

We also had a photo of every guest when they were younger instead of place cards, which did seem like madness at times but was worth it to see people’s reactions on the day.

I was unsure what type of flowers to have with the strong colour of the dresses but Steph from Fairy Nuff Flowers was amazing and pulled together the beautiful bouquets from my mass of photo ideas. I thought at the start that I wasn’t too concerned about flowers but Steph changed that and the flowers ended up being one of my favourite things about the day (she even added trailing gold sequins to my bouquet).

We went with Parties to Go for the catering whose food is delicious but not as formal as some of the other caterers we looked at. Carole was great, she was so enthusiastic and was very accommodating of all our ideas as well as making delicious food, and made it easy for us to just enjoy ourselves on the day.

The amount of laughter/cheering/general noise during the ceremony/speeches/dancing etc. was amazing. I have to particularly mention the creative and hilarious speech from the two best men, Rich and Olly, we both cried with laughter watching it back!

The White Keys really set the atmosphere for the evening dancing, playing a mix of music across different decades to suit the crowd. We had debated whether it was worth getting a large band but it was absolutely worth it and I would highly recommend them. Jo and Greg danced to On Top of the World – Imagine Dragons.

Bright Colourful Hampton Court Wedding Bright Colourful Hampton Court Wedding Bright Colourful Hampton Court Wedding

A lovely moment for Jo and Greg was right at the end of the day, an impromptu finale song with their friends.  We hadn’t planned any kind of exit so just got our stuff to quietly go, but our friends weren’t having any of it, they surrounded us singing and dancing to ‘Take That – Never forget’ and then cheered us out as we walked up the stairs, a perfect end to a perfect day.

Jo also has some top tips to share with any brides to be out there all of which I have to say is fanstastic advice!

  • Get a videographer – We weren’t going to at first but did on the advice of a friend and we’re so glad now. You miss so much and it’s lovely to be able to watch it all again
  • Don’t worry if you don’t try on a single dress and think ‘this is the one!’ as TV etc. seems to suggest you should, some of us just don’t have that kind of reaction!
  • Don’t look round during your vows, if you see other people crying you will too!
  • We asked the photographers to use cameras without clicks for the ceremony, definitely something I’d recommend

During the planning it wasn’t ideal as we were also living with my parents and trying to renovate a house at the same time so it isn’t necessarily advisable, even if you are blessed with a Mum as organised as mine – Thanks Mum!

What a gorgeous day – so many lovely details and it all ties together to be both beautiful and personal. Thank you for sharing with us and to Cotton Candy for their stunning work and for brightening our day!

Hannah + James – Relaxed Vintage Style at Hampton Court House

WEDDINGS, Informal, Vintage Inspired

Relaxed Vintage Style at Hampton Court House by Joanna Millington Photography & Dress by Jane Bourvis

Sometimes, when you see as many weddings as I do, you just get a feel to the day and that you sort of wish you were there – as a friend to the couple to have properly soaked it all up. Well Hannah and James’ Spring wedding last year was one of those. It just looks so relaxed, pretty and fun. I adore Hannah’s bridal style, especially her bespoke Jane Bourvis antique lace dress, and I can’t not mention the dashing groom either, James definitely styled it out with his suit and bow tie [as did his boys!]. Such a lovely wedding captured really naturally by the fabulous Joanna Millington who’s style compliments their day just perfectly.

“It was really important to both us that the day felt as relaxed & informal as possible – I think this was at the heart of our ‘vision’ for the day. We didn’t have colour schemes and themes. There was definitely a vintage feel, especially with my dress, James’s and the boy’s bow-ties and the venue but the most important thing to us was to have a day where everyone felt comfortable & had a brilliant time.”

Sometimes ‘the one’ comes by a complete surprise, and I’m not talking about finding your future husband! I’m talking about the wedding dress. I love how Hannah fell head over heels for a dress almost accidentally, and how beautiful is it? Designed by Jane Bourvis the dress is made up of several antique veils using the very delicate lace. Such a lovely idea and how the imperfections and history of the fabric almost make it that little bit more special and unique.

“I found my dress completely by accident; I wasn’t even going to be ‘dress’ shopping that day, was extremely hungover and wearing black Primark pants! I just wanted to pop into Jane’s shop to make an appointment for the future; the next thing I know, I’m trying on a dress & it’s THE ONE! Jane Bourvis is incredible; she has such a beautiful shop, full of amazing vintage pieces. My dress is made up of several antique veils – the lace is so delicate. I loved the colour and that it had imperfections and tiny wee holes here and there. I knew I was in safe hands with Jane and we worked together to tweak the dress to make it even more perfect. Popping in for my dress fittings was such a pleasure – I miss her!”

Hannah completed her look with the stunning accessory – a Jenny Packham headpiece bought from the gorgeous White Room Bridal boutique in Sheffield.

Hampton Court House is a beautiful venue on the outskirts of London which combines character and glamour but in a rural setting. It also happened to be close to where Hannah grew up, and overlooking the beautiful grounds of Bushy Park where she used to go with her brother and Grandparents it must have provided many happy memories and now new ones to come.

“When we first started thinking about venues someone at work mentioned Hampton Court House to me; it’s really close to where I grew up & looks out onto the grounds of Bushy Park where my grandparents used to take my brother and I when we were little. After checking it out online, I couldn’t wait to visit & penciled it straight-away. It’s gorgeous, has bundles of character. I loved that we could do everything under one, beautiful roof – we didn’t have to ferry people around and if it rained (almost a dead-cert with an April wedding!) that we’d be fine and dandy inside. This actually relived a lot of stress knowing I didn’t have to worry about the weather.

The staff we really amazing & we had loads of flexibility to do extra touches with an incredible back-drop. It was actually snowing the day before we tied the knot & pretty chilly – the staff lit fires in the two beautiful fireplaces, which created a lovely atmosphere.”

For the ceremony, Hannah walked down the aisle to ‘You’ve Got the Love’, the version by Florence & the Machine with a full orchestra Live at the Royal Albert Hall. I love how you can spot the cute flower girls were wearing Converse trainers!

Choosing wonderful suppliers is such a huge part of your wedding planning and it’s so nice to see that Hannah worked with a very talented team, including Fairynuff Flowers to bring her vision together and those sherberty hues in the flowers set the tone so beautifully “I felt so lucky whilst planning the wedding to work with such wonderful suppliers – my florist was no exception. I heard about her through the venue & knew she was the lady for me as soon as I went onto her blog. Steph was amazing – she totally ‘got’ me. I didn’t have the hugest budget for flowers but she still went the extra mile. We used the flower girl’s and bridesmaid’s bouquets on the tables to help things go that little bit further. Steph is a genius, so creative – I thought my bouquet was stunning & love seeing it in the pictures.”

If you are on a budget, it’s important to choose a caterer who can be flexible enough for you to provide your own elements to keep costs down, sourcing their own drink and an amazing bring your own cake table was a great idea for Hannah and James.

“Our food was delicious and it was great working with Junior and his team at JPL catering. He was really helpful and very flexible. We organised our own bar; unfortunately we didn’t have the budget to do a ‘free bar’ all night, but by organising the booze ourselves we were able to keep the costs right down, which lots of our guests commented about favourably.

The cake table was a huge success – some of our lovely friends and family made cakes which were displayed on different cake-stands.”

For the wedding stationery we worked with a friend who helped create all our invites, table names, table-plan & all the extra bits & pieces, like the guest book & the bar menu; I was really thrilled with the way they all turned out & it was really cost-effective. I took my Instax polaroid camera to create a mini photo-booth – with the photos strung across a vintage frame. We took my beloved type-writer to create a guestbook; reading the letters back after we came back from Honeymoon was hilarious, especially once everyone had had a few shandys!”

“I got in touch with our photographer, Joanna Millington, through my bridesmaid Jen. Again, I checked out her work online and was pretty convinced she was the right lady for us. We met up with her for a few gin & elderflowers [like your style!] and the deal was sealed. It was really important to both James and I that we didn’t have cheesy ‘staged’ pics and Jo totally got that brief. I love our photos SO much. I look at them all the time, she totally captured the day & some really amazing moments; so many guests commented on how lovely she was also.”

I find with a lot of my own couples that I work with, that the Groom likes to be involved with decisions on the food and music, and this couple were no exception! I do love the last song at a wedding, when all the guests huddle and cheer the bride and groom, so it sounds like they ended the night on a high!

“Music was one of James’ remits and he suggested a Beatles tribute band. I wasn’t sure at first – did we want just one band’s music for half the evening? However I’m SO glad that he convinced me. The Counterfeit Beatles were AMAZING. They kicked everything off with our first dance, Here Comes the Sun & then played two sets. EVERYONE was dancing – the Beatles appeal to all ages & created the most amazing party atmosphere. They finished their set with Hey Jude – everyone was in a circle with James and I in the middle.

Maybe it was the wedding vino, but it was pretty over-whelming to see all our guests having such a great time surrounding us! When the band weren’t playing we made a Spotify playlist, which James crafted for about a month. This was great as we got to play all our favourite songs which we knew would appeal to all our favourite people; the dance-floor was packed right up until the bitter end. The black and white disco floor under the glass conservatory at Hampton Court House was perfect for late-night dancing.”

“The whole day was incredible – I had expected to be really emotional as I am a massive cry baby – but actually, on the day I was so happy and excited; I couldn’t wipe the ridiculous grin of my face all day. This day is about you & your partner. Whilst it’s important to try & accommodate family & friends I really believe you should stick to your guns & have the day that you want. Try not to get over-whelmed. For me (being a producer & all), it was really handy to have a working budget so I could see how far our money was going. The wedding blogs are also amazing sources of inspiration – I regularly checked in on London Bride when I was planning.”  Thanks Hannah!

I shall leave you with these wise words from the lovely bride, “I guess the thing to remember is that everyone loves a wedding; your guests will be so excited to be part of your special day – even if there are bumps in the road nobody is there to judge but to have fun and celebrate.” Here here!

I also had to include the cute Save The Date video that Hannah produced herself! Simple but so sweet, what a clever lady! “I love craft & wanted to try & do as many little touches as I could without putting loads of pressure on myself & taking away the enjoyment.”

Thank you to the lovely Hannah and James for sharing their day and to their photographer Joanna who is always so inspiring with her work!

Her Lovely Heart – Candy Inspiration Shoot at Aynhoe Park

Her Lovely Heart Wedding Photography - Candy Inspiration Shoot at Aynhoe Park

Following on from my behind the scenes post, I’m excited to be sharing the full ‘Candy’ inspiration shoot by the team at Her Lovely Heart which I co-ordinated and styled with them.

The shoot took place at the decadent venue, Aynhoe Park in Oxfordshire, and it was such a wonderful day to be a part of, with so many talented wedding photographers from Her Lovely Heart and an inspiring creative team all using their incredible skills to bring the concept to life. For me, co-ordinating and styling inspiration shoots can be a lot of work but they are so rewarding, especially when you are lucky to work with such a great team.

Rather than stick to one theme and style, we wanted to make sure the photographers got a chance to play around a bit so we produced three themes as part of the shoot, Candy, Romantic and Glitter. The first of which I’m sharing with you on London Bride alongside the Her Lovely Heart blog.

Each theme was based around an initial creative nail art design, and from this we translated the concept through each look.

We wanted the ‘Candy’ theme to be sugary but grown up, playful but elegant and of course with little sprinkles of colour….sweet but not sickly! The nail look created by Georgie for this was a fun take on the french manicure with a colourful pink base teamed with a contrasting mint green tip, a great look for a bride wanting something a little more playful and modern.

This concept was brought to life with the sleek silhouette of the dress which balanced against the bold feature of a bright pink lip, and alluring eyes. A cheeky pop of colour was also brought in with a pair of glamorous heels and the ombre effect of the flowers in the bouquet softened the look with varying hues of pink tied up with the prettiest ribbons. For a playful element, we added a giant colourful balloon which, just like candy, can’t help but bring on a child-like state of mind.

You can see the initial concept for the theme over on the Her Lovely Heart Candy Pinterest board

Her Lovely Heart Wedding Photographers - Behind The Scenes - Inspiration Shoot at Aynhoe Park

I’m very excited to share with you something that I’ve been working behind the scenes on. I co-ordinated and styled a creative wedding inspiration shoot at Aynhoe Park with the fantastic team at Her Lovely Heart, who are a brand new UK based wedding photographer agency, which has been created by renowned wedding photographer, Marianne Taylor.

The concept behind Her Lovely Heart is to manage and represent wedding photographers [that’s Adam, Liz, Nick and Sophie] so that they are able to spend more time on developing their craft and doing the things they love about photography, and less time on areas such as marketing, admin, accounting and paperwork – which let’s face it as business owners it can be as much work as doing the job itself!

The shoot came about as Marianne Taylor has for a few years teamed up with the talented florist Steph from Fairynuff Flowers to do a mini inspiration shoot to get the creative juices flowing. This year, however it got a little bigger [well, actually much bigger] as it was a great opportunity for all the photographers at Her Lovely Heart to all come together to shoot, create, and play with a little added creative styling, stunning backdrops and some rather beautiful muses.

We created three loose themes for the HLH team to shoot [we don’t do things by halves!] which were; Candy, Romantic and Glitter, all of which were based around the concept of a creative nail art design which was then translated into each look across all the elements such as the flowers, the make up, hair and overall styling.

We were fortunate enough to work with an amazing team of talented wedding suppliers and designers [see below credits] who helped translate the concept into reality. Here is a peek behind the scenes at what we got up to at the amazing Aynhoe Park with the first full inspiration instalment ‘Candy’ coming up on the blog later today so do check back at 2pm! Gold star if you can spot the stylist…

Nina + Joe – Pastel Pretty Hampton Court House Wedding

WEDDINGS, Elegant

CottonCandyHamptonCtHouse_0046

Nina and Joe were married on 27th July last year, at the picturesque Hampton Court House which overlooks the beautiful landscape of Bushy Park. They had an elegant day but with a lovely relaxed style running through, from the beautiful florals to the beautiful creamy photography by Cotton Candy. Nina’s stunning Jenny Packham gown looks incredibly glamorous but I think the couple just radiate that relaxed happiness of a wonderful occasion surrounded by all your friends and family and a little bit of sunshine.

CottonCandyHamptonCtHouse_0001 CottonCandyHamptonCtHouse_0002

I love the shot above as it echoes the lovely 20s glamour feel to the dress with the art deco mirror, “Finding the dress was the most exciting bit for me and it is quite daunting as there were so many styles you can go for. I decided early on that I’d like to have a silk satin dress rather than lace and wanted something that reflected me and my style. I’m quite petite so a big bridal dress was going to drown me! My dream designer dress would be Jenny Packham  but I thought this would be out of my budget. I went to a couple of boutique bridal shops and loved the range at Miss Bush Bridal Wear. I went with my best friend Fran and the first dress I picked up I knew I wanted – it was a Jenny Packham and within my price range – yey! I loved it a s soon as I put it on and it made me feel so glamorous.”

“We wanted the setting to be a Georgian building which we found in Hampton Court House. There was no particular theme but we wanted a vintage era type feel to everything to go with the stylish, shabby chic venue. Colours were of a peach pastel pallet. We wanted to create a relaxed atmosphere for the guests and ourselves so it didn’t feel too formal but romantic & fun!” I’d say judging by the photo below that Nina was definitely having fun – so happy!

“We chose the photographers Cotton Candy who we found online. They took less staged photos with a lovely feel to them and we couldn’t have been happier with the photos. They captured the day perfectly and gave us a set of amazing photos we will have forever.”  I love how the ladies from Cotton Candy also use their vintage cameras to capture really unique shots like this too!

The bridesmaids wore beautiful beaded detail dresses from Monsoon, which work really well with Nina’s Jenny Packham gown.

“We chose a pastel shade for the flowers by Fairynuff Flowers and this was shown in the bouquets also. The main flower’s were roses and hydrangeas which we had in silver buckets on the tables. My aunt also generously grew a load of sweet peas which we dotted about in jars throughout the venue. A great addition was the 6 meter tall silver birch trees we had in the dining hall.”

The trees certainly add glamour and drama – they also act as a great focal point for the top table during the meal.

“Our wedding breakfast was Italian themed with a selection of cold meats, olives and cheese for starter – this was served on handmade wooden boards thanks to Joes’ dad Tony. The main was fillet steak and the dessert a classic Eton  mess. We chase to have Prosecco instead of Champagne as both prefer this and enjoy drinking it! There was a mojito bar set up by two of the ushers in the evening – which went down well”

“The date of our wedding was also the Opening of the Olympics & the first event was the road race which was coming through Hampton Court the day after our wedding! The  roads were being closed in the early hours of the morning so we had to ensure all our guests could get home on the night & the next  day. Plus we had to leave our hired furniture in the venue until Monday and luckily they agreed to us doing this & were really helpful!”

The conservatory area was transformed with pretty lights into a dancefloor – so nice how the evening was still light as people began to dance! “We had an amazing band the ‘Milestones’ who played soul , funk music and  then we had our ipod in-between sets for some classics – everyone got up to dance to something which was brilliant.”

And you have to love a photo booth! The girls from Cotton Candy offer this as an addition to your package, a very worthwhile addition if you ask me and I love the silver backdrop!
