Intimate but beautiful Rainy Chelsea London Wedding

WEDDINGS, Informal

Intimate Rainy Chelsea Wedding London by Brighton Photo

Faye and Dan had their wedding in February this year, after just a month of being engaged in January! They decided to have an intimate Chelsea wedding for just immediate family, which was a hard decision for them but it ended up being the perfect day – despite a little bit of London rain! “It was completely relaxed, fun and so special sharing it with just our closest and most cherished family. We hope to have a party within the next year or two to celebrate with all our friends and family. We have since moved abroad and wanted to make the commitment to each other before we started a new chapter and adventure in our lives together.”

Chelsea is such a beautiful part of London that it is the most charming location for an elopement or intimate wedding. Faye and Dan chose to hold their ceremony at the Chelsea Town Hall registry office which is renowned for it’s celebrity nuptials,“A couple of days after we were officially engaged we booked the Rossetti room at the Kensington and Chelsea registry office – we didn’t even have time to go and see it but liked the idea of all the famous couples who had got married there before us!”

Faye’s style totally encapsulates a London Bride with her city-chic outfit with beautiful short lace dress, birdcage veil and of course, no London wedding would be complete without the ultimate accessory… a pretty white umbrella! Judging by their smiles it looks like they didn’t notice the drizzle at all…

“I wanted to wear something quite simple and understated so I didn’t look specifically for a ‘wedding dress’. Instead I went shopping on Oxford Street with my mum and sister and we all fell in love with a Diane Von Furstenberg ivory lace dress in Selfridges. I wanted blue shoes and later found these in Nine West. With the dress and shoes ticked off the list I started to relax only to realise about a week before the wedding that I had not even thought about any accessories or a coat! My friends helped me so much by sending me ideas and options and coming with me to try things on. Despite being adamant that I wanted to look low key, I was then worried that I didn’t look bridal at all – that’s when Fur Coat No Knickers saved the day. I bought a vintage feather stole, a birdcage and a gorgeous hair clip from them a few days before the wedding.”

“My regular hair stylist, Giovanna at Gino Hairdressing in London, did a brilliant job of my hair and makeup, I couldn’t have been happier with the end result. Giovanna is such a lovely person and I couldn’t recommend her enough!”

Dan looked dashing in a Navy three piece suit “Dan didn’t want a traditional wedding suit and so we were looking for something that was special but could be worn again. We found the perfect suit in the sale in Reiss which he wore with a shirt from Hugo Boss. He wore a tie he already owned that we both really liked and bought new shoes from Russell and Bromley.”

“My mum and dad arranged my bouquet and Dan’s buttonhole through their local florist and brought them up to the registry office for us. I was open to suggestions and ended up going with a simple but beautiful ivory bouquet.”

The wedding was so last minute they didn’t have a photographer until their thoughtful and generous friends booked Heather at Brighton Photo for the couple to ensure they had the precious memories of the day! “As we gradually told more and more people about the wedding one question that kept popping up was whether we would have a photographer. Two weeks before the day we still hadn’t got round to organising anyone… this is where my wonderful friends saved the day. They arranged and booked the amazing Heather of Brighton Photo to be our wedding photographer. She had shot one of their weddings in the summer and had done such a beautiful job. Heather was great at making us feel at ease on the day. She had put a lot of research into the best locations for the photos and she really committed to the shots getting absolutely drenched in the process! We are so happy with the photos which do an amazing job of capturing the most important day in our lives and will be a beautiful reminder for many years to come.”

The couple celebrated with a visit to a local pub, The Phene where the venue kindly allowed them to relax in the upstairs private lounge with their family in a beautiful setting whilst the attentive staff looked after them whilst they sipped on Champagne. They later went to The famous Bluebird Restaurant nearby where the party of nine in fact dined amongst all the other guests in the restaurant despite it being their wedding day! “We loved the buzzy atmosphere, the food & wine were delicious and the staff were brilliant! It was the perfect end to the perfect day.”

Congratulations to the lovely Faye and Dan, such a cool city wedding – thank you for sharing your day with us and to Heather for her beautiful work – just shows a little bit of rain does no harm!

Ellie + Liam – Vintage Hackney Wedding at The Roost

WEDDINGS, Informal, Vintage Inspired

Winter Hackney Wedding at The Roost by Christine Wehrmeier

Although it’s just turned into Spring, here’s a wonderful winter’s wedding to share with you today. Ellie and Liam had an intimate vintage inspired Hackney wedding at the very cool venue The Roost. I love how their style translates through their day beautifully, even the stunning ceremony backdrop of the Town Hall Hotel is in keeping with their glamorous Old  Hollywood style.

“We didn’t set out to have a theme as such – we both love to travel and it was while backpacking throughout Central America for 6 months that Liam proposed, so we decided to incorporate this into our day. Small and intimate and fun for all was our vision so we invited just our close family and friends and ‘relaxed’ on the formalities.”

Got to love how Ellie went from her cute onesie into glamorous starlet! Ellie wore the Lalique Lace 1920.1 dress by Charlie Brear which was the catlayst for her beautifully original vintage inspired bridal style “It was all a bit by accident really. I had a very different look in mind and after trying many dresses I was persuaded to try on a different style and was completely surprised by how much I loved it and from there a 1930’s theme fell into place. I really enjoyed the search for original vintage pieces though I’m particularly fond of my shoes! I gave the bridesmaids free reign to choose their own dresses for the day and they chose the same one!”

Ellie accessorised the dress with a number of original 1930s items that she sourced such herself, such as the Ermine fur cape, the rhinestone bracelethair comb and dress clips. She then teamed the dress with the most perfectly matched ‘Francesca’ shoes by Emmy London.

Liam’s pocket handkerchief was a token gift from the bride on the morning of the ceremony… Ellie had it made for him out of the spare material left from her wedding dress. And Liam surprised Ellie with a custom made pair of ‘just married’ converse shoes! How sweet and thoughtful are those gifts!

“Since we had decided upon a winter wedding we simply chose a colour to complement the season – a nice rich berry red for the bridesmaids dresses and matching ties for the groomsmen. We also chose this colour for the brides bouquet of Amaryllis and Roses. We chose simple Gypsophelia bouquets for the bridesmaids – such a delicate flower that looks like a whispery ball of lace!”

“We used to live next door to the Town Hall Hotel in Bethnal Green and would regularly pop in to the bar for our favourite night cap – the best Old Fashioned cocktail in town! We wanted a small London wedding with just our closest friends and family, and after discussing our search for a suitable venue that day, the bar tender suggested we take a look at the stunning Council Chamber which was not only perfect in size but stood apart from any other we had seen and the decision was made!”

The ceremony was such a meaningful, poignant part of the day for the couple, “After I said my vows my husband said ‘thank you’. I still get teary when I think of that moment!” Liam says “When my beautiful wife walked in, seeing her in the dress – it was a very powerful moment. Although he also recalls another of his favourite moments of the day, “When she went wrong during the first dance and I didn’t!”.

The couple had some beautiful live acoustic music sung during the ceremony by Charlotte Kao and Spencer Taylor from Him and Her which added to the intimacy of the day.

“Our photographer Christine Wehrmeier is a very close friend and we had the privilege of having our photos taken by her a year or so before we became engaged and loved the results so it was very easy to make that choice!

As is popular with London weddings, the couple had a routemaster bus to transport their guests to their venue reception, but this is a beautiful special vintage one complete with old adverts, how fun!

“We found The Roost and we just loved the quirky-ness of it with it’s fabulously eclectic decor and being just a short bus ride from the Ceremony it was the perfect location and size for our reception. The venue spoke for itself so there was very little required in terms of decor on the day – just fairy lighting in the windows of our reception dining room”

“We wanted good quality hearty food for a winter day. Bangers and mash is our favourite meal so we decided this would be the menu for our wedding. We didn’t want a cake as neither of us particularly eat it so we decided to do something different… we made our own Wedding Jelly! We recreated the moment Liam proposed whilst Scuba diving with an underwater scene using lego parts complete with a scuba diving bride & groom!” That’s definitely an original wedding cake if ever I saw it! Love how they incorporated their engagement proposal into the day and who doesn’t like jelly right?

“We came across Paddy playing the Disco Shed at Bestival and when we found he did Disco Wed to we booked him straight away – EVERYONE was on the dance floor ALL night! For entertainment we made up our own DIY photo booth with silly wigs and hats and a Polaroid camera – such fun and so easy!”

Don’t stress about the details and how it will all ‘look’ – Weddings are about commitment and celebrating love. Weddings are about people. Weddings are about you. Build on that and everything else will follow. Choose the right photographer for you and your style, not because of the price! That’s the biggest investment you will make of your day as those pictures will be the memories that last. If you find the right one for you they will find the details that matter.

Huge thanks to the lovely Ellie and Liam and to their photographer Christine for sharing their wedding day, so charming and such fun!

Stylish & Intimate London Wedding at The Bluebird Chelsea

WEDDINGS, Elegant, Informal

Intimate & Stylish London Wedding by Ed Osborne

There is just something so utterly romantic about London’s beautiful mews streets. This stylish and intimate London wedding captures the romance of the city and a beautiful couple.

Having met in South Korea, with Justin from the USA and Joella from the UK and a move to Beijing on the cards, they decided on an intimate Spring wedding in London as a farewell to their friends and family. The day was captured exclusively on film by photographer Ed Osborn.

Having been together for over 6 years, for the wedding, it was important to them to be able to enjoy their favourite wines and foods for their guests so kept the wedding quite small. “It was really important to both of us to have a really small wedding. Although we really wanted to get married, neither of us had ever wanted a huge wedding with loads of people staring at us! Because we were set on having such a small wedding this meant we weren’t able to invite all of our friends and family. We were worried about this but everyone was incredibly supportive of our decision.”

Joella looks stunning in a dress she tracked down from the high street, however despite it being the ‘one’ it wasn’t the first dress she bought “As we had such a short engagement  I knew I wouldn’t be able to go to a bridal boutique due to the short timescale, so soon after we got engaged I went by myself to a sample sale. I didn’t expect to get anything that day but got swept up in the moment and bought a traditional, strapless gown. Whilst it was a lovely dress, it wasn’t what I had in mind and I soon started to have doubts. A couple of weeks later my mum came down to London to help me buy shoes and accessories. As she had missed out on wedding dress shopping I thought it would be fun to try on a few high street dresses which may also help perhaps confirm that I’d found the right dress! However as soon as I tried on the ‘Evelyn’ dress from Phase Eight I knew that was the one! As soon as I put it on everything just felt right.”

After having my trial for my hair and make-up with Cathy Shaw as I wasn’t wearing a veil she came up with the idea to place flowers in the back of my hair which was perfect!”

“We chose Bluebird for the reception as I had always liked the look of it (we used to live nearby in Fulham and would often go past but had never actually been in). As we were keeping the guest list under 30 we were looking for an intimate venue but we didn’t want to be seated in a restaurant with lots of other people. We also still wanted to play our choice of music and have a bit of a boogie! Bluebird was perfect as they have several private rooms.

We chose the Bluebird room as it has a gorgeous private bar in the room and was on the ground floor- so felt separate from everyone else. It was also a great size for our number of guests. We had a champagne reception around the private bar while Justin and I had out photos taken with Ed, then we all sat around one large table for a three course meal with plenty of wine, followed by coffee and chocolates.  I loved having everyone on one table. As our parents had never met before, it was a great chance for them to get to know each other more and Justin and I could see everyone and chat to each other and our friends.”

“I don’t really know how you would describe our style – we really just picked the things we thought were beautiful and worked well for a city wedding. We didn’t really have any decorations because Bluebird already looks great. I wanted pink and ivory flowers for my bouquet and Lisa at the Flower Sanctuary in Balham (a florist local to where we were living at the time) helped me choose. I’d originally thought I’d have peonies but I’m so pleased I went for the Avalanche roses as they suited my dress really well. I was thrilled with my gorgeous bouquet. Bluebird put us in contact with Hannah Martin, who did the flowers for the reception. She did a wonderful job and the flowers were gorgeous. We took them all home and our flat was filled with flowers for a week afterwards!”

“We originally weren’t going to have a wedding cake (I don’t know what we were thinking?!) but after briefly considering a few options I discovered Hummingbird did wedding cakes! After that, there was no doubt that we would have a red velvet cake! We had a wonderful time at their Spitalfields store tasting cake flavours and choosing the design.  We went for an ivory cake with a pink flower on the top. We didn’t tell anyone it was red velvet until we cut into it so that was a good surprise. We were actually all too full after the delicious meal to eat much cake, so the staff at Bluebird kindly got little cake boxes so everyone could take a piece home! We had many texts the next day saying how delicious the cake was! I didn’t want anyone to be left out (who wants to miss out on cake?) so the day before the wedding Justin and I went to Ms Cupcake in Brixton and picked up some vegan red velvet cupcakes for the vegan and lacto-free guests. They were also delicious by all reports!

“After the ceremony we gave our guests a little tour of London on a vintage Routmaster bus. That was one of our favourite parts of the day. It was so much fun sipping prosecco and waving at all the tourists.  It was a nice treat for our guests as most of them are not from London.

We didn’t go crazy on lots of little details but we did have a few personal touches. Justin is from the USA and I am from the UK- I found some American and British flag cufflinks online which he wore for the wedding as a nod to both our homelands! We decided not to have wedding favours but we had little bus tickets made up for the bus ride with our names, wedding date and location on. The guests all liked these and kept them as mementos. Instead of a guest book we provided a variety of London postcards for guests to leave messages for us and post in the card box. Everyone enjoyed this!”

“We had the ceremony at Marylebone Town Hall in the Blue Room. Marylebone was the only place we considered getting married. We just loved the building and the romantic idea of all the different people who have got married there. We also used to spend a lot of time in the Marylebone area when we first moved to London in 2008. We rang up the day after we got engaged to book the Blue Room! We had never even seen it in person but we just knew it would be right for us.

We didn’t see the room until we walked in at the start of the ceremony! It was magical to enter for the first time ever and see our friends and family standing waiting for us. We chose not to have bridesmaids or a best man and instead chose our friends to be the witnesses and my sister held our rings for us whilst my brother managed the music for the ceremony.”

“Because it was a small wedding and we didn’t have an aisle to walk down, we decided to enter the room together rather than have the tradition of my dad giving the bride away. We entered to Sigur Ros’ song ‘Untitled Three’. We cut a bit off the start to a more dramatic point. It felt like an amazing dream. Hilariously, when the registrar was telling my younger brother at what points to play the music on the ipod, she accidently played a few seconds of Gangnam style! Justin and I didn’t hear this of course but everyone told us later that they half expected we were going to dance into the ceremony to Gangnam. We actually had it on there as a joke song for the end of the reception as we originally met in South Korea! We signed the register to First Day of my Life by Bright Eyes  and walked out to Jose Gonzalez’ version of Heartbeats. We also just want to mention how amazing the registrars at Marylebone Town Hall are. They really put us at ease and made the day fantastic.”

“Justin and I met half an hour before the ceremony on the steps of the town hall! There was no one else around just us two (or it felt like that!) as the other guests had all gone inside when I arrived. We had both felt a bit nervous (not about marrying each other but about having everyone watch us say the vows and also about if the day would all go well) but as soon as we saw each other we knew everything was going to be perfect. My dad, my other siblings and our friends all didn’t see us until we walked in to the ceremony room – I really liked that as it felt so special and like a surprise!”

“Our amazing photographer was Ed Osborn.  We knew of him because I worked with his girlfriend 4 or 5 years ago! I had often seen his work online and we loved the look and feel of his photos. We absolutely love the fact that he shoots exclusively in film and the guests loved it too. Ed captured some really gorgeous moments and we love the photos so much.”

“Even though the wedding was small, we still wanted to have some music and dancing. It was important to Justin and I that we had music we really liked at our wedding so made our own playlists and played them on an ipod hooked up the sound system the restaurant provided. We also asked guests to suggest songs to us and included them too. Everyone got excited when one of their song picks came on. There may not have been many of us but we still had a great time drinking and dancing! The Bluebird staff were brilliant and rearranged the table after the meal to make a large enough dance floor.

We absolutely loved out wedding day! We are so glad we did it the way we did and are so thankful to everyone who made it so special. We are now having an amazing time living in Beijing and love looking at the photos and remembering the day.

Whether you are having a tiny or massive wedding, follow your instincts and have the day you want. Oh and read lots of wedding blogs! They are so much fun and I loved being nosy at other peoples weddings.

Thank you so much to Ed for sharing his beautiful work and congratulations to such a lovely couple on their beautiful wedding day and write up! Hope you had a wonderful honeymoon this Christmas too!
